PLATYPUS RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT
Tailored & Practical Engineering Solutions
Platypus Research and Development is a professional team of creative engineers who thrive on turning concepts into reality. Our staff possess many years of experience across a diverse range of applied scientific and engineering disciplines to rapidly craft manufacturable solutions to solve your problems.
Our projects start in many ways; from sketches to highly constrained specifications bound by standards. Our deliverables are similarly varied: a set of drawings, a complete system ready for manufacture, a comprehensive turnkey solution or simply temporary augmentation of existing engineering teams. All have one thing in common, they are developed in consultation with our clients to ensure we achieve their desired goals in an optimal manner.
CUSTOM ENGINEERING SOLUTIONS
Our past projects have included technologies spanning:
-
- Extremely high voltages (>200 kV)
-
- Pulsed, CW and modulated laser systems at IR and visible wavelengths
-
- Numerous RF systems and antennas from MF – millimetre wave
-
- High speed FPGA design and PCB layout
-
- Embedded Linux and dedicated CPU systems and software
-
- Real-time control systems for heavy machinery
-
- Quantum optical control and instrumentation
We have undertaken short and long-term projects, as either isolated tasks or assisting a client’s team of designers meet a deadline. Our internal processes are adaptable and appropriate for the project duration, and we believe that incremental delivery is important to allow progress to be continually assessed. A successful engineering outcome is one that meets our clients’ commercial and technical requirements.
TRAINING
We believe the sharing of information allows for improved decision making, communication, trust and understanding between teams and better technical outcomes overall. In addition to the professional exchange of knowledge that is a normal part of our client interaction, we can also deliver standalone courses or presentations to rapidly educate an audience in a specific subject matter.
SPACE & DEFENCE
We have specialist expertise and active projects in optical and RF approaches to space domain awareness and the development of HPRF and laser-based directed energy weapon systems.

CAPABILITIES
- Concept-to-prototype design services.
- Applied electromagnetics, antenna, and RF systems.
- Electro-optical and laser engineering.
- Signal and image processing expertise.
- Mechanical, electronic and software design.
- Real-time-embedded control solutions.

ABOUT
PLATYPUS R&D
Platypus Research and Development began trading as J&D Webb Engineering in 1999, later rebranding to Platypus Instruments, and finally adopting its current name in 2023. We provide engineering design and consulting support to the Canberra area. The name ‘Platypus’ was chosen to reflect not only the uniqueness of our business but also its roots in Bombala, NSW, a town renowned for its platypuses. Although our team and focus have expanded significantly in the subsequent 10 years, we’ve retained our name as a symbol of our unique and sovereign capability in the Australian engineering community.
Our head office is located in Fyshwick, Canberra’s primary industrial area and we have significant business activities in both Sydney and Adelaide.
CAREERS
Platypus R&D is a company dedicated to the creation of engineering solutions to problems spanning multiple technical disciplines. Our projects are driven from our own product development needs and those of our clients who rely upon our expertise to bring their own requirements to fruition. To meet these challenges, we require technical staff who can independently research and apply fundamental concepts drawn from contemporary science and engineering to solve real-world problems with a view for commercial feasibility and timeliness. We rely upon a healthy balance of pragmatism, creativity and a broad technical skillset.
